New York MCTMT Calculations Now Use Real-Time Payroll Totals
Staying compliant with New York MCTMT requirements just got easier. BambooHR now automatically calculates Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT) using real-time quarter-to-date payroll totals, helping ensure tax liability is determined accurately as payroll is processed. Employers can also see how payroll totals contribute to MCTMT calculations, giving them better visibility into when the quarterly threshold has been reached.
What's new
BambooHR now tracks quarter-to-date payroll totals across both MCTMT Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations to determine when the New York MCTMT threshold is met. Once combined payroll exceeds $312,500 during a quarter, BambooHR automatically begins calculating MCTMT.
If the threshold is reached after payroll has already been processed earlier in the quarter, BambooHR automatically calculates any required catch-up tax amounts for wages previously paid during that same quarter. This helps ensure tax obligations are calculated correctly without requiring manual adjustments.
Employee job locations now play an important role in MCTMT reporting. BambooHR uses employee location data to track wages separately in Zone 1 and Zone 2, improving reporting accuracy and helping ensure payroll is attributed to the correct zone.
BambooHR also no longer uses MCTMT exemption designations within the system. MCTMT liability is now determined based on payroll activity and the applicable quarterly threshold.
What you'll see
You'll find quarter-to-date payroll totals for Zone 1 and Zone 2 within Tax Account Details, making it easier to understand how MCTMT liability is determined and when the quarterly threshold has been reached.
You may also notice that a fixed MCTMT rate is no longer displayed. Because calculations now use real-time payroll totals and threshold-based logic, liability is determined dynamically throughout the quarter.
On the payroll that first exceeds the quarterly threshold, you may notice larger MCTMT amounts than expected. BambooHR automatically calculates any required catch-up tax for wages paid earlier in the quarter and distributes the resulting liability across employees included in that payroll run. This affects how the tax appears in payroll records but does not change the total tax owed.
What you can do
Review employee job locations to ensure employees are assigned to the correct location, since job location data determines whether wages are tracked in Zone 1 or Zone 2.
