Being agile in business is simply paying attention to market changes and then creating plans to respond to changes. A good example of the need for business agility is a new technology entering a market and completely changing how something is used, such as the iPad and touchscreen technology.
After Apple released their tablet, suddenly touchscreens became the must-have technology in electronics. To stay competitive tech companies had to add touchscreen technology to their own products and adapt the way they did business, or risk becoming irrelevant in the marketplace. These other tech companies were able to implement touchscreens into their products because they had some sort of business agility plan or business agility manifesto.
Your business’s ability to be agile applies to nearly every aspect of the company. Leadership needs to be able to see upcoming changes in a marketplace and then organize the company to make the necessary plans to adapt to the changes. Then it is up to the rest of the business to implement those plans in a fast and efficient manner in order to stay ahead of the market. Business agility takes time and planning. However it is not just a good idea, it is the way businesses are able to survive long-term.
What is Organizational Agility Good For?
A company’s ability to be agile in business is based in their ability to organize themselves. The term “organizational agility” and “business agility” are nearly interchangeable. Staying organized is the only way that you can be fully agile in business. Organizational agility is directly related to how well your business will adapt to change.
Let’s go back to our touchscreen technology example. If a company was unable to properly organize themselves to start adding touchscreens to their products, then they would have vanished from their own market. Whether a new competitor appears, the overall market shifts, or technology changes, a company’s organizational agility is key to surviving in a market, gaining new business, and keeping the clients and customers they already have.
