Welcome to the April edition of the BambooHR Workforce Insights report, where we dive into the latest trends shaping the world of employment.
Workforce Insights is powered by aggregated data trends from the millions of admins, managers, and employees who use BambooHR in the US and across the globe.

April shows increase in job openings
- In April, there was a global decrease in hiring and turnover, while job openings continued to increase for the second month in a row.
- Globally, hires were down 18% compared to April 2024, and turnover decreased by 19%.
- In the US, trends mirrored the global pattern, with turnover dropping by 11% and job openings increasing by 6%.
- Job openings increased across all industries except for tech and education.
- Mixed industry trends show a decrease in hiring in construction and education, but an increase in travel and hospitality.
- Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific had the lowest numbers of job openings, while Latin America and Middle East/Africa had the lowest turnover rates.
- Reviews continued to decrease globally and in the US after highs in December and January.
- PTO requests decreased in April from the previous month.

Hiring, job openings & turnover
In April 2025, hiring and turnover decreased, while job openings increased for the second month in a row.
Hiring
- In the US:
- 1.9% decrease in hiring from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 16% decrease in hiring year-over-year from April 2024.
- Globally:
- 2.6% decrease in hiring from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 18% decrease in hiring year-over-year from April 2024.
Job Openings
- In the US:
- 6% increase in job openings from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 11% increase in job openings year-over-year from April 2024.
- Globally:
- 4% increase in job openings from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 9% increase in job openings year-over-year from April 2024.
Turnover
- In the US:
- 11% decrease in turnover from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 21% decrease in turnover year-over-year from April 2024.
- Globally:
- 10% decrease in turnover from March 2025 to April 2025.
- 19% decrease in turnover year-over-year from April 2024.

Industry Trends: Hiring, Job Openings & Turnover
- All industries except tech and education saw an increase in job openings from March to April; tech decreased by 4% while education stayed the same.
- Travel and hospitality had the highest proportion of hiring and turnover.
- Education continued to have the lowest proportion of hiring .
- Nonprofit had the lowest proportion of turnover and highest proportion of job openings .
- Hiring decreased by 8% in construction but increased by 8% in travel and hospitality.

Regional Trends: Hiring, Job Openings & Turnover
- Latin America (LATAM), Europe, and Asia Pacific had the lowest number of job openings.
- LATAM and Middle East/Africa (MEA) had the lowest turnover.
- North America and LATAM had the highest percentage of hires in proportion to total employees.
- MEA and Europe had the lowest percentage of hires.
- North America had the highest proportion of turnover.
Manager & Peer Reviews
Overall, reviews decreased from March to April.
- In the US, peer reviews continued to fall slightly in April, decreasing by 1% month-over-month and 3% year-over-year.
- Manager reviews also dropped month-over-month, decreasing by 7%, and 2% year-over-year.
- Globally, peer reviews also fell, with a 9% decrease month-over-month, and 3% year-over-year.
- Manager reviews saw a 7% decrease month-over-month and a 3% decrease year-over-year.

Employee PTO Requests & Approvals
PTO requests and approvals decreased in April from the previous month.
US PTO Requests:
- The proportion of employees requesting PTO decreased by 5% month-over-month and decreased by 6% year-over-year.
- Approvals decreased by 4% month-over-month and decreased by 7% year-over-year.
- In April 2025, US PTO requests were at 34%, with approvals at 17%.
Global PTO Requests:
- The proportion of total employees requesting PTO decreased by 11% month-over-month and 8% year-over-year.
- Approvals decreased by 6% month-over-month and 9% year-over-year.
- In April 2025, global PTO requests were at 38%, with approvals at 18%.
Regional Trends: Employee PTO Requests & Approvals
Industry Trends: Employee PTO Requests & Approvals
- Construction and restaurant, food and beverage saw the highest PTO approvals.
- Restaurant, food and beverage and travel/hospitality had the lowest proportion of PTO requests but were among the industries with the highest approvals.
- Finance and nonprofit continued to be the top industries with the highest proportion of PTO requests in April.
Methodology
All source data is from the BambooHR® platform, gathered between April 2018 and April 2025, and includes over 5.01 million employee data points across the globe.
The data includes employee and manager performance scores, PTO requests, and other data points that have been analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way to protect the privacy of employees and the integrity of the metrics.
Turnover includes all types of separation of an employee from their company, including voluntary and involuntary separations.
