Designing Your Environments to Increase Your Productivity and Creativity
Culture Srinivas Rao Nov 08, 2018
Nearly all human behavior is the result of our environment. The spaces we work in, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the people we associate with and the information we consume have profound impacts on our behavior and our emotions. For most people, their environments are not deliberate choices, but often set on default. They rely on willpower to make changes to their behavior and fail. They attempt to make drastic and unsustainable changes, and give up altogether. If the environment that somebody works in doesn’t inspire them, it’s unlikely they’ll do their best work in such an environment. If all they associate with their work is terms like “cubicle farm” and “rat race,” the potential of both the organization and individual is limited. But it doesn’t have to be this way. By making deliberate choices and changes to our environment, we can make our desired behaviors automatic. Deliberately designed environments lead to increases in productivity, well being and performance in virtually every area of our lives. By creating an environment that is conducive to the person you want to become, you increase the likelihood that you will become that person.
